YGGDRASIL

Is an immense and central sacred tree, the world tree. Around it exists all else including the Nine Worlds.

Animals that dwell in Yggdrasil:

Vedrfolnir - A Hawk

Unnamed  - An Eagle with no name

Heidrun - A goat

Ratatosk - A squirrel

Dain, Dvalin, Duneyr and Durathror - Four stags

There are three roots that extend from Yggdrasil that go to three different worlds.

NIDHOGG

The first root goes to the Niflheim where Nidhogg gnaws on it.

MIMIR

The second goes to the Jotunheim to Mimir . Mimir protects and uses the well of wisdom, the well that Odin gave his eye for in order to gain wisdom.

NORNS

The third goes to Asgard to the Norns. The three Norns are deities responsible for shaping the course of human destinies. The Norns can be malevolent or benevolent.

 GODS

Odin , The Allfather (Aesir)

Known as the Allfather because he breathed life into an Ash and Elm tree to make man and woman, he is the ruler of Valhalla. Odin is a great magician among the gods,  Odin hung himself from a branch of Yggdrasil for 9 days & nights, pierced himself with his spear until the runes revealed themselves. He sacrificed an eye to gain wisdom from Mimir's well.

Thor (Aesir)

Thor, is the powerful god of strength and thunder who wields the hammer Mjolnir .He is the mighty defender of gods and goddesses, who are constantly under siege by the forces of chaos. Thor is the most popular god in the pantheon, and his many exploits are recalled in many myths and tales.


Freyja (Vanir) - Honorary Aesir 

The most renowned of the Norse goddesses, who is the sister and female counterpart of Freyr and is in charge of love, fertility, battle, and death. Her father is Njörd, the sea god. she rules over Folkvangr where half of those that die in combat go upon death, whilst the other half go to Odin in Valhalla, her great hall in Folkvanger is Sessrumnir.


Freyr (Vanir) Honorary Aesir

The ruler of peace, fertility, rain, sunshine and also associated with good harvest. He is the son of Njörd and brother of Freyja,the gods gave him Alfheim the realm of the Elves to rule over.

Njord (Vanir) Honorary Aesir

A principle god of the Vanir, he is the god of the wind and of the sea and its riches. His aid is invoked in seafaring and in hunting, and he is considered the god of “wealth-bestowal,” or prosperity.

Frigg (Aesir)

The wife of Odin and mother of Balder. She was a promoter of marriage, fertility, prophecy, clairvoyance and motherhood.

Sif (Aesir)

The golden-haired goddess associated with earth and is the wife of Thor. Sif is a goddess of grain and fertility, she is the mother of Ullr, god of archery and skiing and is the stepson of Thor.

Tyr (Aesir)

A war god who is patron of warriors and heroes. He sacrifices his hand to Fenrir who bites it off when he realizes the gods have successfully bound him until Ragnarok.

Baldr (Aesir)

Son of Odin and Frigg, beautiful and just, he is the god of light, joy, purity, and the summer sun. Most legends about him concern his death when his brother the blind god Höd, deceived by Loki, killed Balder by hurling mistletoe.

Loki (Aesir)

Loki is a cunning trickster who has the ability to change his shape and sex. Although his father is the giant Fárbauti, he is included among the Aesir. He is the father of Hel, the wolf Fenrir, and the world serpent Jormungandr.

Heimdall (Aesir)

The watchman of the gods, he dwells at the entry to Asgard, where he guards Bifrost, the rainbow bridge. He possessed foreknowledge and keen senses, particularly eyesight and hearing, he possesses the resounding horn Gjallarhorn, which he will use to call the gods to battle for Ragnarok.

Vidar (Aesir)

He is associated with vengeance, the son of Odin and Grid, it is foretold he will avenge his father's death by killing the wolf Fenrir at Ragnarok.

CHILDREN OF LOKI

Hel

Presides over an underworld realm of the same name, where she receives a portion of the dead. 

FENRIR

A monstrous wolf of incredible strength. The gods feared him and tricked him so he could be fettered until Ragnarok. Tyr had to sacrifice his right hand to the wolf in order to fetter him.   

JORMUNGANDR

A sea serpent known as the world serpent, Odin put the serpent in the great ocean that surrounds Midgard. The serpent grew so large that it encircles the Earth and grasp its own tail.

ODIN'S ANIMAL COMPANIONS

Odin has five notable animal companions:

FREKI & GERI - Wolves

Both meaning "the ravenous" or "greedy one".

HUGINN  & MUNINN - Ravens

Meaning "Thought and Memory" they fly over Midgard and bring information back to Odin.

SLEIPNIR - Eight legged horse

Sleipnir was born from Loki when Loki shape shifted in the tale "The fortification of Asgard".
